Just because you’re a mama doesn’t mean you can’t take the time to read too! For our last post during our I Love to Read Month we’re looking at books for Mom to indulge in. As we said in our first post, reading lessens the chance of Alzheimer’s and helps to keep your brain sharp as you age.

I could list a ton of book suggestions, and I will, but the big issue that we have to address first is how to actually get a spare minute to yourself to read a book.

  1. Nursing – When I was still breastfeeding my middle daughter, Pippy, I read through the entire Hunger Games series on my Kindle. Nursing gives you the opportunity to sit down and sit still during the day. If you have more than one child turn a TV show on for him, grab a book and immerse yourself into another world.
  2. Nap time – Rather than cleaning the house or starting dinner, grab that book, brew a cup of hot tea and curl up to read.
  3. Bathroom time – I know, I know; it sounds totally gross and you probably won’t have a ton of time to indulge because what child under the age of seven actually understands the concept of privacy, but give it a try. When my husband’s home, I grab my iPad because it has my Kindle books on there. Let’s just say sometimes it takes an abnormal length of time….If the book’s good why rush, right?
  4. Grab a cup of joe at the local shop – Chat with a friend and see if you two can’t take turns swapping kids for an hour, during your lunch break or when your partner is at home head to the local coffee shop with your current read. Support a local business and get lost in another world within the pages of your book.

Not sure what you should read? Check out these suggestions!

5 Books to Read Before Seeing the Movie – The Caffeinated Library

Hunger Games Trilogy – If you haven’t read the books in Suzanne Collins’ trilogy, get thee to a book store!!! Seriously, these were such an excellent and fun read. It was perfect to lose myself in.

Orphan Train by Christina Baker Kline – This book sheds light on a part of American history that most of us don’t even realize happened. The story switches back and forth between present day and flashbacks. My mom read it and said it was one of those books that made her sad it was over.

All the Light We Cannot See by Anthony Doerr – “From the highly acclaimed, multiple award-winning Anthony Doerr, the beautiful, stunningly ambitious instant New York Times bestseller about a blind French girl and a German boy whose paths collide in occupied France as both try to survive the devastation of World War II.”Oh yeah and it was a Pulitzer Prize Winner.

Gift from the Sea by Anne Morrow Lindbergh – A story about self growth, a literary classic, and a must read for women everywhere.

The Aviator’s Wife: A Novel by Melanie Benjamin – I haven’t read this novel, however, anything about the Lindberghs is fascinating to me. Plus Benjamin does an amazing job at telling a historical story based on the events of Anne Morrow Lindbergh’s life.

A Wrinkle in Time by Madeleine L’Engle – This is one of my all time favorite books and even though it’s considered a children’s novel the timelessness of it makes it a great read at any age.

I did a little crowd sourcing among my friends and here are their recommendations:

Outlander Series by Diana Gabaldon

Turn Here Sweet Corn by Atina Diffley

The Museum of Extraordinary Things by Alice Hoffman

Fables by Bill Willingham – I’ve been told this is a graphic novel and if you are a fan of ABC’s Once Upon a Time like I am it is a must read.

Father Tim series by Jan Karon

Wild Notes: Observations over time about birds and other fleeting things. by Mike Lubow – This is a very easy, pick it up and read a page book and is written in diary style.

Wild Notes. Books that Moms can Indulge In.

Wild Notes by Mike Lubow

Do you have any good books for us to get lost in?
