If you haven’t read any of the children’s books Llama Llama by Anna Dewdney stop what you’re doing right now and get to a library. Dewdney’s books are amazing for toddlers because of their rhymes and brightly colored pages. I love reading them aloud to my own children. Sadly, Dewdney lost a 15-month-long battle with brain cancer on September 3rd. Dewdney is survived by her partner, Reed Duncan, and two adult daughters. In 2013, Dewdney wrote a beautiful piece for the Wall Street Journal titled “How Books Can Teach Your Child to Care “How Books Can Teach Your Child to Care“. In the WSJ piece Dewdney says,

However, empathy is as important as literacy. When we read with a child, we are doing so much more than teaching him to read or instilling in her a love of language.  We are doing something that I believe is just as powerful, and it is something that we are losing as a culture: by reading with a child, we are teaching that child to be human. When we open a book, and share our voice and imagination with a child, that child learns to see the world through someone else’s eyes.  I will go further and say that that child then learns to feel the world more deeply, becoming more aware of himself and others in a way that he simply cannot experience except in our laps, or in our classrooms, or in our reading circles.

[Tweet “In lieu of a funeral Anna Dewdney wants you to read to a child. #llamallama”]

Today, in honor of Dewdney, read one of her books to your child. This was Dewdney’s request, that in lieu of a funeral service, we would remember her by reading to a child.
