Every year during the month of February schools across the Twin Cities celebrate “I Love to Read” month. Laura and I love reading. Laura, is actually a huge book nerd; huge as in her nephew and nieces always receive books for gifts. Yes, she’s going to be that aunt only it won’t be new sock or underwear (thank goodness!) but books. There is nothing better than getting sucked into a good book, the kind where you’re sorely disappointed when it’s all over.

The benefits of reading, and we’re not just talking about print publications (although I still maintain there’s nothing quite as satisfying as turning the page of a book), have been scientifically proven. Honestly, if there isn’t a scientific reason to read I really don’t care. I love reading!
I love to read because…
- It increases intelligence. An article in Child Development discussed a study of 1,890 identical twins in the UK showed higher test scores in the twin who was read to than the twin who wasn’t. The study is one that’s ongoing and looks at the life experience since the twins share the exact same gene pool.
- It may lower the risk for Alzheimer’s Disease. Mentally challenging activities such as actively playing chess, doing puzzles and even reading may lower the risk of an elderly person developing the debilitating disease a recent study found.
- It greatly improves vocabulary. The more you read the greater your vocabulary grows. Who doesn’t like to have a nice, big vocabulary? As Dr. Seuss says, “The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you’ll go.”
I really could go on and on but the important thing to know is that reading is good for you, it’s excellent for your family and there’s really no determent to reading. This month on First Time Mom, we’ll be sharing with you tips for how to read as a busy mom, the importance of reading to your child(ren) and some fun books to pick up.
