Did you know that the average pregnant woman needs to have 1000mg of calcium daily? That’s equivalent to drinking four glasses of milk every day. I don’t know about you, but I’m not really a big milk drinker now. When I was a child, yes, definitely was able to drink four glasses of milk everyday. Now if I could eat chocolate chip cookies with my four glasses of milk, well, challenge accepted!

What happens during pregnancy is that if you are not getting enough daily calcium, which is called calcium deficiency, from your everyday diet, your baby’s calcium needs will be met by taking calcium from your own bones, putting your own bone health at risk. You need calcium to preserve your bone mass while your baby is developing. Adequate intake of calcium will help prevent your body from taking calcium from your bones, thus helping to decrease your risk of osteoporosis.

Pregnancy Questions: How do I get more calcium if I don't like milk?

It certainly isn’t healthy or good for me to be consuming enough chocolate chip cookies to make sure that I drink my four glasses of milk so that I can for sure get the 1000mg of calcium that my body and baby needs during pregnancy. There are a few different options as far as calcium goes and I’m ready to give you some suggestions:

  1. Seeds – Think chia, poppy, sesame, and celery seeds. You’ll have to figure out how much calcium is in a serving but that’s listed on most nutrition labels. The chia seeds that I currently have in my cupboard have 2% the recommended daily intake (RDI) of calcium in a serving which is 1 tablespoon. That’s a lot of chia seeds…
  2. Cheese – I love cheese but to be honest, I get really constipated when I’m pregnant. Cheese is not my friend during pregnancy; however, it is a source of calcium. Parmesan cheese has the most calcium in it with 33% the RDI of calcium.
  3. Yogurt – Other than drinking milk and eating cheese, yogurt is going to be your next best option when it comes to getting that 1000mg of calcium. Plus there are probiotics in yogurt which are the good bacteria you want to live in your gut. A serving of yogurt a day will get you 30% of the RDI for calcium.
  4. Dark Leafy Greens – Some of you are going to love this and some of you are already trying not to gag. Popeye was right when he said that spinach made him super-duper strong. A cup of cooked collard greens contains a quarter of the RDI of calcium but who likes collard greens?

I like a little variety in my daily diet and because of that I know that I’m not getting the 1000mg calcium that I need during pregnancy. I turn to supplements but have you ever tried to swallow one of those horse-sized pills? Just thinking about it makes me sick to my stomach. I like gummy vitamins but I don’t like all of the sugar that’s often found in gummy vitamins. For my calcium supplement I choose Viactiv Calcium Soft Chews in the caramel flavor. #Viactiv Calcium Soft Chews are intended to help achieve the daily recommended amount of calcium. Although Viactiv does not replace the need for a prenatal vitamin it’s important to note that many prenatal vitamins only contain 20-30% of the calcium you need. Plus compared to leading gummy calcium supplements, Viactiv Calcium Soft Chews have ½ the sugar and ½ the calories.

A healthy baby starts with a healthy pregnancy so do as much as you can to ensure your baby is getting the calcium, vitamins and minerals that’s needed to properly support you and your developing baby. Viactiv Calcium Soft Chews are available in milk chocolate or caramel flavors at major retailers including CVS, Rite Aid, Target, and Walmart, as well as supermarkets nationwide. Remember, if you are pregnant, breastfeeding or trying to become pregnant, speak with your healthcare provider before taking any supplements. #BumpUpYourCalcium

Which flavor of Viactiv Calcium Soft Chews do you think you’d like best? Chocolate? Or Caramel?
