One of the things I love about contributing to First Time Mom is that it offers me a platform to showcase some of my favorite things and highlight causes I believe in. Toady I’m excited to introduce you to two things I love, my wonderful neighbor, Kristin Sellers, and Beautycounter. Beautycounter is so much more than another personal care company, it is a part of a movement for “better beauty.” Its mission is to, “Get safer products into the hands of everyone.” Through personal consultants like Kristin, Beautycounter offers a variety of skin care, makeup, and bath & body products that are free of over 1,500 harmful or potentially harmful chemicals, which are on their “Never List.” Beautycounter also works with a variety of non-profits to advocate for consumer protection and change in the personal care industry… Yup, I’m impressed!
Chris and Kristin (and their adorable dog Koda) are the kind of neighbors everyone hopes for but only few are blessed to actually have. From helping track down our neighbors run-away dog to helping me break into my house after my toddler accidentally locked me out while I had stir fry on the hot stove (that’s a STORY for another day), Kristin is always ready and willing to lend a helping hand. After falling in love with Beautycounter products herself and with such a heart to help others it’s no surprise that Kristin decided to, “join the movement,” and become a Beautycounter consultant. Kristin’s passion for safer products is personal.
“I believe I’ve found the meaningful mission I’ve been searching for in Beautycounter. I am so excited to begin sharing my knowledge about safe personal care products, take part in EFFECTING CHANGE in an industry that so desperately needs a legislation overhaul, and help you make safer swaps for yourself and your family.
The issue of infertility is really personal for me as Chris and I are currently working through our own infertility journey. No one can pinpoint why we have been unable to conceive again after having anectopic pregnancy in July 2014. I also now know that the number of toxic products I have been exposed to over the years have not done me any favors either. Our infertility struggle is a big part of why I am so passionate about switching to safer products, it is a story that needs to be shared. I also wanted to “put myself out there” for other families who are struggling with infertility. I promise you are NOT alone. My hope is that we can get safer products into the hands of everyone so that we no longer need to diligently review product labels to make sure the products we are using EVERY DAY are not impacting our ability to have children or increasing our odds of getting cancer.” -Kristin Sellers
My Beautycounter Experience
One of the things that first impressed me with Kristin as a Beautycounter consultant is how much she believes in the company’s mission and products. Whether it’s by giving out free samples or working with non-profits to advocate for change, Beautycounter and their consultants truly put their money where there mouth is. Kristin gave me samples of her favorite skin care products and lent me her entire Kids Bath Collection and Baby Bundle Collection to try for a couple of weeks. Even though her last name is “Sellers” (heh, heh, get it!), Kristin never makes you feel like she’s trying to sell or push product that you don’t need. She truly wants to serve women and families by finding the products that are right for them and helping them #switchtosafer.
Since I know many of our faithful First Time Mom readers have little ones, I’ll focus on the kids and baby products I’ve tried. I used the Kids Bath Collection on my three year old son, “Triple A.” I LOVE all three products: Super-Duper Clean Body Wash, Nice Do Kids Shampoo, and Not a Knot Kids Conditioner. It’s summertime folks so my son gets preeettty filthy and the body wash and shampoo did the trick no problem. Now normally I do not use conditioner in my son’s hair, but my I love how light Beautycounter’s Not a Knot conditioner is and it leaves my son’s hair so soft! One thing a lot of products fall short on in my experience is the scent. While I do not like overwhelming smells, I like my products to smell good. With light and fresh berry and citrus scents the Kid’s Bath Collection fits the bill!
For my one year old girl, “Little Girl,” Kristin had me try the Baby Bundle Collection. Even at one years old, Little Girl still has sensitive skin. I was pleased to find that Baby Gentle All-Over Wash got her fresh and clean even after the messiest of dinners without irritating or drying out her skin. For baby’s sensitive areas, Baby Daily Protective Balm provides a light protective barrier. I honestly haven’t had much use for balm yet because cloth diapering my daughter keeps her bum almost rash free. Come fall I see this balm being perfect for chapped cheeks or dry patches. (Sidenote for our cloth diapering mamas: Kristin asked some cloth diapering Beautycounter consultants for me if Baby Daily Protective Balm was cloth diaper safe. Some said yes and others suggested only using it with a liner. I say it should be fine to use with cloth diapers if you use a liner over the diaper’s absorbent material.) Last but not least in the Baby Bundle is the Baby Soothing Oil. This is a product I’ve really fallen in love with. It is perfect for summer as it is light and quickly absorbs into baby’s skin, leaving it nourished but not oily. This is a small thing, but I love that the Baby Soothing Oil comes in a pump container… any baby product that I can use one-handed is a score in my book! Beautycounter has other great products for little ones and their mamas, be sure to check them out here.
So there you have it, a look into a company with a cause, a consultant with a heart for helping others, and bath time products that will keep your little ones clean without compromising their health. Thanks to Kristin, one lucky First Time mom reader will win his or her choice of a Beautycounter Baby Bundle and Kids Bath Collection.
